The following recruits from our area were photographed by Enterprise staff photographer J. Kiely Jr. and interviewed by correspondent Alice C. Elwell during their October visit to Parris Island, S.C., where Marine recruits undergo the grueling training designed to turn them into lethal fighting machines.

Although accompanied by military personnel while on base, Kiely and Elwell were allowed to talk to recruits as long as it did not disrupt training.

Recruits lose their identity during training and can't use, "I, me, or my." Many times the trainees would address themselves as "This recruit."
