MIND BODY GLOW ON Exfoliating renews skin Exfoliate the old, hydrate the new. That's the mantra for spring if you want to buff up those scaly areas that have built up during the winter around knees and elbows. "A lot of people don't realize they have to get the dead skin off before the moisture will penetrate," esthetician Tracy Miller said. There are two ways to remove dead skin: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliation is accomplished by rubbing the skin with a brush, loofa or scrub. Scrubs typically contain sea salt, sugar, or ground nut shells. A mild acid is used in chemical exfoliators to dissolve the dead skin. David Johnson, an esthetician for 25 years, says that it is best to seek the advice of an esthetician before purchasing services or expensive products. "We are trained to know what is best for the skin." If done improperly, exfoliation can cause irritation or more severe problems. - Cox News Service Copyright 2006.
