MIND BODY

SEEING RED

Grapes, teas, hold heart-healthy antioxidants

Red wine gets its rich, ruby hue from antioxidant polyphenols, which may be the secret to its heart-healthy power. A new Greek study found that arteries relaxed immediately after a single glass of alcohol-free red wine almost as much as they did following a serving of the real thing - by 6.1 and 10.5 percent, respectively - in 15 people with atherosclerosis - arteries blocked by plaque.

Blood vessels need to stretch with each heartbeat or blood pressure rises, as does the risk of obstructed arteries, leading to heart attack and stroke. Polyphenols may help nip that process in the bud, experts say. Find plentiful polyphenols in juice made from Concord grapes as well as in green, black, and oolong tea.

Lip gloss said to curb urge to smoke

Want more from your makeup? Joey New York says the company's new lip collections will help you quit smoking or lose weight.

LipNix uses a fragrance blend of lemon, geranium and helichrysum - a plant with an earthy smell - that supposedly helps curb the urge to smoke.

LipFit aims to inhibit appetite through the herbal cocktail of peppermint, grapefruit and spearmint. This blend is supposed to reduce cravings.

EAT RIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT

Rest easy with these diet tips

One in three Americans is plagued by insomnia, the National Institutes of Health estimates, and 10 percent of them struggle for shuteye every night. Dr. Atul Malhotra, a Harvard Sleep Disorders Research Center physician-scientist, suggests these tips for welcoming the sandman:

— Eliminate unusual suspects. Even decaf coffee and chocolate contain small amounts of caffeine. Purge all caffeine sources for 2 weeks. If you sleep better, make the change permanent.

— Avoid spicy or gassy foods or wolfing down your dinner. Anything that challenges your tummy can cause indigestion, which will keep you awake.

— Try lighter suppers. An overly full stomach may cause frequent waking. Have your largest meal at lunch, long before bedtime.

— Ban late-evening alcohol. A glass of wine with dinner won't hurt, but a nightcap just before you hit the sack may disrupt REM - rapid eye movement - sleep.

— Have a bite before bed. A small snack about an hour before turning in may help you fall asleep; going to bed with a growling, empty stomach can keep you awake.
