Attorney General candidate Martha Coakley |
She is a no-nonsense prosecutor whose face is well-known because of her association with high-profile cases - including the Louise Woodward shaken-baby murder trial.
But Coakley is as far from a star-power DA as you can get. She’s all business and, based on her solid record, she’ll do a good job as the state’s attorney general.
The Ledger endorses Coakley for the state’s second most important office.
Coakley is following in the footsteps of a friend and mentor, Attorney General Tom Reilly, who failed to win the Democratic primary race for governor. Reilly’s low-key personality was a drawback in the three-way race for the gubernatorial nomination but his diligence and demeanor suited the office of attorney general.
Coakley is much the same. And she says she has no intention of using the attorney general’s office as a stepping stone to bigger things. She’ll have her hands full just managing the wide range of responsibilities of the office. Coakley sees public safety issues, especially those involving children and the elderly, health care, energy regulations and oversight, the economy and homeland security as priorities. As the list suggests, the attorney general has jurisdiction extends far beyond law enforcement.
Coakley’s opponent, Republican Lawrence Frisoli, is a trial lawyer who is dogging the district attorney over dissatisfaction with a case in which he represented the family of a child who was abused. Frisoli has neither the experience nor the demeanor to hold such a critically important office.
