ABOUT
THE SERIES
A decade of education reform culminates this year
when a students' eligibility for a high school diploma hinges
on a single test for the first time in state history.
Yet four months before graduation, one in six
high school seniors has yet to pass the MCAS exam.
The Patriot Ledger examines this issue, beginning
with this three-part series by staff writer

ABOUT
MCAS
What is the MCAS?
The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System test is a
statewide exam administered to students from third grade to 10th
grade.
How many seniors have not passed the MCAS?
About 10,500 of the 60,000 students in the Class of 2003 - about
one of six seniors - have not passed.
What is the MCAS graduation requirement?
Starting with the Class of 2003, all students must pass both
the English and math sections of the 10th-grade exam to become
eligible for diplomas.
How many times can a student take the exam?
Students are provided with two opportunities to take the MCAS
each school year, once in December and once in May. By the time
the Class of 2003 graduates in June, seniors will have been given
five opportunities to take the exam. If they do not pass the December
2002 retest, they will not receive diplomas because the results
of the retest scheduled in May will not be available in time for
graduation ceremonies.
When will the state release results of the December
2002 retest?
Early next month.
