You don’t have to be a nature lover to enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle with a walk on one of the trails at the South Shore Natural Science Center on Jacobs Lane. The quiet atmosphere allows you to relax and the exercise will give you more energy to finish your day.
Cost: $0
Time: 60 minutes
WALK AROUND
There are six short trails you can walk, all in well under an hour. The Sylvester Trail is a nice loop that won’t take you more than 30 minutes. You’ll walk through forest and cross a bridge over a wetland area. Keep your eyes open for birds and a variety of interesting plants.
CHECK IT OUT
Hedwig is a barred owl that lives in an enclosure behind the science center. Be sure to stop and visit him before you head to your trail. In Vine Hall you can look at a small exhibit of paintings, photographs and information about local birds.

QUICK BITES
Bring a sandwich and a bottle of water from home and enjoy it at one of the picnic tables by the science center or on a bench along the trail.
RELAX
Take a minute to stop by the small fountain in front of the science center or pause to sit on a fallen tree during your walk. Take in the sounds around you. You can’t help but unwind a bit in the tranquillity. You can also bring a book and do some reading.
