TO THE RESCUE

Tom Seery

Firefighter-paramedic, Scituate

Tell us about yourself

“No call is ever the same. It’s the best job in the world.”
“It’s important to be open-minded, level-headed and never feel that you’ve seen it all or done it all, because you haven’t.”
“The majority of the time you see sickness and death, so it’s always a pleasure if you deliver a baby, although I always say I assisted in the delivery, because I didn’t do the work, the woman did.”

What did you want to be when you were a kid? “When I was a little kid I’d play with fire trucks and look up to the firemen. When I got out of college, a big interest of mine was a lot of hiking and mountain climbing. I took an EMT course and really fell in love with it.”
What would you have been if not a firefighter: “I don’t know. It wouldn’t be an office job, I know that.”
Best advice you ever got: Never stop learning.
Person who gave it to you: A professor in college.
What do you do in your time off? Spend time with the family. Play with the animals – four dogs, three cats and a horse.
