A few pointers to keep baby, new parents happy
Even though being a parent is the most important job in the world, there’s little training offered for moms-and-dads-to-be.
It’s baptism under fire for new parents, so here’s some advice to take the edge off.
- Don’t overspend on baby equipment. You don’t have to push a $700 Bugaboo stroller just because Angelina Jolie or Katie Holmes did. The cheaper strollers are just as durable, chic and federal law requires them to meet the same safety standards.
- Don’t buy all new clothes. The idea that babies could get allergies from used clothes is a myth because once an article of clothing is washed in hot water it is free of any germs.
- Go outside. Overcome your anxiety about strangers and worries about the baby getting sick or crying in public. Fresh air is good for you and the baby.
- Don’t force a feeding schedule. Newborns have a tiny stomach - usually the size of a walnut - and to set a high expectation and demand a schedule for somebody that size does not really help.
- Make time for romance. Newborns require attention and nurturing as does your relationship with your significant other.
Find a trusted baby sitter and take some time for just the two of you. And, try not to talk about the baby during your time.
These are only a few mistakes that many new parents make.
The list could be longer but the learning is constant.
In the end, though, mistakes happen and lessons are learned.
