Deborah Swanson, Hanson
Age: 59
Occupation: Plymouth County Extension educator and horticulturist
Proudest Accomplishments
Being successful in a field that was previously dominated by men. When I graduated from UMass in 1970 with a degree in plant and soil sciences, I was told I would not be hired as an extension agent because they only hired men. I have been in this job for 37 years, and worked my way up from technician to be an educator in landscape and nursery and the program manager for Plymouth County Extension.
Perfect Day
Any day in my garden or walking in someone else’s garden. I like to be outdoors in the landscape in any season, in any weather, looking at plants and trees or working in the garden.
Looking Forward
I’m looking forward to having more time to spend in the garden and visit other gardens. And to teaching people how to select the right plant and plant it correctly so they can reduce pesticide use.
Pass It On
I have a passion for selecting beautiful and hardy plants. I want to pass on my passion for plants that add to the landscape and don’t detract from it.
