BROCKTON
Back
In my opinion, the goal of journalism is integrity in reporting the news. But the day before Brockton’s preliminary election, The Enterprise featured a news article on the three candidates for mayor (``Mayoral candidates make final push,'' Sept. 17).
This news article had separate photographs of the three candidates. Incumbent mayor Harrington’s photo measured six square inches. That of challenger Gayle Kelley measured 12 square inches. That of challenger Stewart measured 51 square inches! Now I wouldn’t object to an endorsement by The Enterprise on the editorial page. Their opinion is, after all, their opinion. But to show such favoritism on a news page seems outrageous to me. Does The Enterprise feel it affected the vote and contributed to the narrow margin between the two top candidates? In any event, I consider this an egregious violation of The Enterprise’s obligation to present issues impartially to the public on its news pages.
