Braintree mayor, council debate is canceled

Tonight’s mayoral debate has been canceled because it conflicts with the funeral of a Braintree High School student.

BRAINTREE - Tonight’s mayoral debate has been canceled because it conflicts with the funeral of a Braintree High School student.

Debate organizers said the event, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Braintree Yacht Club, was canceled because the wake for Braintree High School senior Margaret “Maggie” Lynch will be held tonight.

The 17-year-old lacrosse team co-captain and honor roll student died in a fall at her home on Sunday. Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. at Mortimer M. Peck-Russell Peck Funeral Home, 516 Washington St., Braintree. The funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Church.

Tonight’s debate, sponsored by the East Braintree Civic Association, was to have included mayoral candidates Joseph Powers and Joseph Sullivan and candidates for councilor at large.

It was unknown whether the event will be rescheduled.

The Braintree League of Women Voters is sponsoring a candidates’ forum from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 at Braintree High School.
