LATEST STORY: O'Brien elected Plymouth County treasurer

Plymouth County voters elected Democrat Thomas J. O’Brien as treasurer on Tuesday in a decisive win at the polls over Republican challenger Edward J. O’Connell.

O’Brien, a former state legislator from Kingston, was unanimously appointed in 2006 to serve as Plymouth County’s treasurer following the retirement of John McLellan.

Voters on Tuesday gave him another six years on the job.

O’Brien said the voters responded to his positive message.

“We focused on a very positive message, talking about our accomplishments over the last two years, and our ideas for the future,” O’Brien said.

O’Connell, a Marshfield resident, criticized O’Brien’s job performance during the campaign. Tuesday, he wished O’Brien well, and offered thanks to his supporters.

“I’m very proud of the efforts of my volunteer staff,” he said. “We brought the issues to light in Plymouth County.”

As treasurer, O’Brien will continue to manage the county’s finances while serving as the chairman of the Plymouth County Retirement Board, which oversees pensions for roughly 11,000 current and former county employees. In the coming months O’Brien said he plans to help the county save money through bulk purchasing, and generate new revenue by creating renewable energy.
